Battery duration appears to be excellent. Like the other Fuji superzooms the S5700 runs on four AA batteries, and Fuji makes no particular claim about battery life, but a standard set of alkaline batteries was still providing a full charge after well over 150 shots. As for card capacity, a freshly formatted 1GB card provides approximately enough space for 285 shots. One interesting point is that like the FinePix F40fd, the S5700 can accept both xD Picture and SD cards, thanks to a dual-purpose slot. Unlike the F40fd though it will accept SDHC cards. Note: These ISO test shots were taken in the late 11th century, which was the last time we had any sunshine in this country. I used automatic white balance and program exposure, and all shots were hand held at the widest zoom setting. Also worth noting that processing of RAW images from your device is the main point of using software like this without shelling out for expensive processing suites like Adobe Lightroom. Although the S5600 is happy shooting interiors thanks to the impressive ISO range, AF-assist lamp and powerful flash, it's perhaps best suited for outdoor photography where users can really take advantage of its strong but lightweight body, range of shooting modes and long-range zoom lens.Beneath its robust body lie the sensor enhancements that make the FinePix S5200 Zoom punch above its weight. Boasting a new 5th Generation five megapixel Super CCD HR sensor and Fujifilm’s new Real Photo Technology, the FinePix S5200 Zoom has the power to capture large images with incredible clarity and detail in a range of lighting conditions. The S5600 has an ISO range from 64 to 1600. I've found that pictures taken at ISO400 are still very acceptable, although noise levels at ISO levels 800 and 1600 mean that you should reserve these settings for occasions when it's better to have even a noisy picture than no picture at all. The bottom line here is that you'd need to spend several hundred pounds on a DSLR to obtain noise-free images at these ISO levels, so I don't see this as a problem or flaw. Similarly, the 10x zoom is very useful and although some purple fringing appears at full zoom (under certain lighting conditions) the resulting images are by no means spoiled. The camera's lens housing is threaded to permit the fitting of after-market lenses, so you can extend the S5600's abilities without spending hundreds more for a camera with 20x zoom and a super-macro feature. Using the vivid colour mode gives bright saturated colours that ironically look a lot more natural than the standard mode, although it also makes the purple fringes stand out even more. The manual settings which the s5200 featured allow much control over the image, such settings like TTL metering, ISO, flash, Macro, White Balance and Red Eye Reduction could be manipulated. Number of recorded pixels: Still image: 2,592 x 1,944 (5.04 million) / 2,736 x 1,824 (3:2) / 2,048 x 1,536 / 1,600 x 1,200 / 640 x 480 pixels. Movie: 640 x 480 / 320 x 240 pixels, 30 frames per second with monaural sound. Direct storage to media.

The S5600 has both an LCD monitor and an LCD viewfinder. Due to the restricted space the monitor is only 1.8in with 115k pixels, which is slightly larger than the screen on the S5500, but with the same fairly low resolution. Its surface is quite reflective, and despite the one-touch monitor brightness control it is very difficult to see in bright daylight. Unfortunately the electronic viewfinder is also 115k pixels, which isn’t really high enough resolution in my opinion. It appears to be the same viewfinder used on the S5500. It would have been nice if it could have been fitted with something similar to the larger and much sharper 235kp LCD viewfinder found on the S9500. This was shot at 200 ISO, giving a shutter speed of 1/160th, which with the camera’s superb handling is fast enough for this zoom shot. ISO 200 is the default setting in automatic mode, and produces superb results that are still completely noise-free.

New to the S5600 is an Anti-Blur mode, which the company asserts is more effective than image stabilization technology found on other cameras. It works by using the onboard image processor to increase the shutter speed in poor light by boosting the ISO from 64 up to 1,600. The Natural Light exposure mode also uses the camera's processor to produce low noise images using high ISO settings in low light situations when flash cannot be used. Features new to the S5600 include an automatic pop-up flash, a Highlight warning that indicates if an area is overexposed, and VGA movie recording at a rate of 30fps. As well as Manual Exposure, users also have the option to shoot in RAW and JPEG. Taken in natural colour mode, this shot again shows the slightly muted colours, as well as the ghastly purple fringes around the brighter highlights. The manual is reasonably straightforward to follow though the camera itself is easy enough to use straight from the box. The more specialised features will be absorbed as you go on. While the camera doesn't really offer any significant advantage in terms of wide-angle photography, the 370mm focal length means you can get closer to out-of-reach subjects such as wildlife or sporting events.

Power source options: 4 x AA-size Alkaline batteries, 4 x AA-size NiMH batteries (not included, sold separately), AC Power Adapter AC-5VX (not included, sold separately) At the maximum sensitivity setting of 1600 ISO there is some image noise present, and a lot of fine detail has been sacrificed, but colour rendition is still very good and the image would still make a decent print. Focal range: Normal: Wide-angle: approx 90cm to infinity (in high-speed shooting mode; approx 2m to infinity) Telephoto: approx 2m to infinity (in high-speed shooting mode; approx 4m to infinity) Macro: Wide-angle: approx 10cm to 2m (in high-speed shooting mode; approx 10cm to 2m) Incorporating a 10x optical zoom, the FinePix S5600 is the third mini-SLR styled addition to the FinePix range following the S5000 and S5500. White balance: Automatic scene recognition/Preset (Fine, Shade, Fluorescent (Daylight), Fluorescent (Warm White), Fluorescent (Cool White), Incandescent)/Custom

The S5600’s newly designed lens produces excellent results at all focal lengths, with good corner sharpness and minimal distortion. This shot was taken at the widest zoom setting. Equivalent to 38mm it isn’t really wide enough for panoramic landscapes.
