About this deal

I have TG2 which is 12MP while TG3/4 is 16MP. This is the reason I did not upgrade to TG4 - too many MP.

Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 Review | ePHOTOzine

So the 4x zoom on the TOUGH TG4 is average for a water-proof compact. Its sibling the TOUGH TG-860 is a little out of the ordinary with a 5x zoom that starts at a super-wide 21mm and extends to 105mm, while the Nikon COOLPIX AW130 also has a 5x zoom ranging from 24-120mm.Just looked in the TG-3 manual. The mode is called "Wide 2", with the icon showing two fishes and the digit "2".

Olympus Tough TG-4 Review | PCMag

Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Color, Light Tone, Grainy Film, Pin Hole, Diorama, Cross Process, Gentle Sepia, Dramatic Tone, Key Line, Watercolor, Vintage, Partial Color, Bleach Bypass Images are soft at default setting, though with relatively few sharpening artifacts. Strong noise reduction even at base ISO reduces fine detail. Available shooting modes from the mode dial are (AUTO mode), (AP, Advanced Photo mode), SCN (Scene mode), ART (Art Filter), P (Program mode), A (Aperture Priority mode), S (Shutter Priority mode), M (Manual mode) and (Movie mode).

FullHD video is recorded with stereo sound at 30fps, with optical zoom and image stabilisation. The camera has a number of high-speed video modes, recording at 240 or 120fps, although at a reduced resolution. When you do have to make use of it, the TG4’s menu system is one of the best designed on any underwater compact. Press the OK button at the centre of the control pad and you can navigate eight function menu options displayed down the right side of the screen each of which activates a fly-out menu when selected. All the really useful stuff is here including picture mode, white balance exposure compensation, ISO sensitivity, drive mode and Image size. ISO 1600 prints at 5 x 7 inches just pass our seal of approval, retaining full color and exhibiting low noise. Similar to ISO 800, contrast detail is now lost in our red-leaf swatch of fabric, but the rest of the print remains reasonably sharp. Above left: 100% crop, 4.5-18mm at 18mm, 1/10, 100 ISO, IS off. Above right: 100% crop, 4.5-18mm at 18mm, 1/10, 100 ISO, IS on. The new TG-4 steps in as the only top-end rugged compact to offer shooting in RAW. It joins Olympus' Tough range as the TG-3's logical successor. No other major changes, as all the specifications remain the same as the TG-3's. So, will the addition of RAW revolutionise the waterproof compact market?

Olympus Tough TG-4 Review - Review 2015 - PCMag UK Olympus Tough TG-4 Review - Review 2015 - PCMag UK

The battery is same LI-92B used in the earlier TG3 and provides enough power for 300 shots, not as good as the 370 you’l get with the COOLPIX AW130, and if you make extensive use of the GPS or Wifi that number will reduce significantly. Remaining power is shown on screen by a three segment battery graphic. The battery is charged in the camera via the A/V / charging port. There’s a supplied A/C charger and a cable with a USB connection at one end and a proprietary connection to the camera at the other. so you can plug in and recharge from a laptop, car adaptor or any other convenient source, but you’ll need to remember to take the Olympus cable with you. It’s the same arrangement on the Nikon COOLPIX AW130, except with a standard USB port on the camera, making it a little more flexible. i always read that peak sharpness is around 3 stops down from max aperture for all lenses, zoom and prime alike . so i don't understand why smartphones and action cameras have no possibility to change aperture and always shoot wide open with the same 1/2.3" size sensor). Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. See how we test. The Olympus Stylus Tough TG-4 features a 4x optical zoom lens, with a bright aperture of f/2.0, and is equivalent to 25mm to 100mm in 35mm terms. The sensor is a 16 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, with sensor-shift image stabilisation to help keep shots sharp in low light or when using the optical zoom. Olympus states that the TG-4 can go as deep as 50 feet. I wasn't able to test that personally, but the camera worked fine after spending time submerged in my kitchen sink. It also survived numerous drop tests from as high as seven feet. I did my testing in the summer, so I wasn't able to take it out in freezing weather, but after spending a few hours in the fridge it performed admirably.Top right of the lens is recognizably an integral flash and combined AF assist/self timer/LED lamp window, the flash being controlled via a dedicated setting on the standard four-way control pad at the rear of the TG-4. Flash settings wise, we get the standard auto and forced flash/fill-in option, along with a red eye setting and one that activates the fairly blinding LED lamp (in conjunction with a holding down of the shutter release button), for when you need that extra ‘oomph’ in the illumination department – perhaps for shooting a short video clip. Beach, Cuisine, Documents, Fireworks, Night, Night landscape, Night portrait, Panorama, Portrait, Self-portrait, Snow, Sports, Sunset, Underwater, Landscape (scenery) I did note a good improvement in over and underexposed areas in the RAW conversion of the old school bus photo and one of a tuber on a lake. One might have been able to work some of these improvements on a JPEG file as well, though. Viewed the full size JPEG of the mountain trees. As noted in the review, the foliage was very blotchy. Other rear buttons include Info, Play, and Menu. There's a four-way joypad (with center OK button) that is used to navigate through menus and adjust EV compensation, flash settings, and the drive mode. Pressing the pad in the left direction launches an on-screen menu that adjusts additional settings, including the JPG output style, white balance, ISO, file format, and image aspect ratio.
