About this deal

NO! You must not drive wearing any type of cast. If you do your insurance will be invalid. How long must I wear the cast? Always remove any covering as soon as you can to avoid causing sweating, which could also damage the cast. E. Adherent materials. Adherent substances (such as Dow Corning medical adhesive B) are applied to prevent slipping and chafing between the skin and the padding. They can contribute, however, to an increased amount of itching inside the cast. Tincture of benzoin compound should not be used in this situation because of fairly frequent skin reactions. Commercial adhesive removers are available. Plaster bandages and splints are made by impregnating crinoline with plaster of paris [(CaSO 4) 2H 2O]. 1, 2 When this material is dipped into water, the powdery plaster of paris is transformed into a solid crystalline form of gypsum, and heat is given off:

John., Ebnezar (2009). Practical orthopedics. New Delhi: I.K. International Pub. House. p.406. ISBN 9789380026275. OCLC 871242240. A cast might have to be replaced during the healing process if the injured area becomes less swollen and the cast gets looser. In that case, the cast might be replaced with a splint to provide more freedom of movement. What types of casts and splints are available?

Casting Bandage

Although these bandages were an improvement over Larrey's method, they were far from ideal. They required a long time to apply and dry and there was often shrinkage and distortion. A great deal of interest had been aroused in Europe around 1800 by a British diplomat, consul William Eton, who described a method of treating fractures that he had observed in Turkey. He noted that gypsum plaster (plaster of Paris) was moulded around the patient's leg to cause immobilization. If the cast became loose due to atrophy or a reduction in swelling, then additional gypsum plaster was added to fill the space. Adapting the use of plaster of Paris for use in hospitals, however, took some time. In 1828, doctors in Berlin were treating leg fractures by aligning the bones in a long narrow box, which they filled with moist sand. Substitution of plaster of Paris for the sand was the next logical step. Such plaster casts did not succeed however as the patient was confined to bed due to the casts being heavy and cumbersome.

Orthopedic Casting Tape, also known as an Orthopedic Casting Bandage, is a strong, durable, moldable and comfortable casting tape/bandage that offers some advantages compared to common plaster of paris bandages. Like plaster bandages, fiberglass and polymer are easy to apply, but light-weight and more durable. Fiberglass or polyester impregnated with polyurethane, also producing less mess when applied, is commonly used for non-displaced fractures and severe soft-tissue injuries. STAYGUARD™ IS THE BRAND OF CHOICE If you experience symptoms of calf pain, chest pain or shortness of breath, please attend your local A&E department immediately. BenefitsOne of his patients after the Battle of Borodino in 1812 was an infantry officer whose arm was amputated at the shoulder. The patient was evacuated immediately following the operation and passed from Russia, through Poland and Germany. When the dressing was removed on his arrival home in France, the wound had healed. Larrey concluded that the fact that the wound had been undisturbed had facilitated healing. After the war, Larrey began stiffening bandages using camphorated alcohol, lead acetate and egg whites beaten in water. Apply forearm casts to allow full 90° flexion of all metacarpophalangeal joints and opposition of the thumb to the index and little fingers.

While they aren’t as popular as they used to be, plaster casts still have some advantages. Compared to other cast types, plaster casts are: Dip the plaster or fiberglass rolls in water by placing them on end, and this allows air to escape and results in complete soaking of the plaster. The bandages are sufficiently soaked when the bubbling stops. They can be left in the water up to 4 minutes without decreasing the strength of the cast, but the setting time decreases with the length of time they are immersed. Therefore, for maximum working time, remove bandages soon after the bubbling stops. Lightly crimping the ends of the plaster bandages helps prevent telescoping of the roll. Adkins, Lisa M (July–August 1997). "Cast changes: synthetic versus plaster". Pediatric Nursing. 23 (4): 422, 425–7. PMID 9282058. If unexpected swelling occurs in a circular cast, bivalve or split the cast immediately all the way to the patient’s skin as described in later in this chapter IV.B and C. Crepe bandages, commonly made of cotton, are a woven, elasticated bandage. Crepe bandages are ideal to support the healing of sprains and strains, as they provide good compression to injured areas, as per the PRICE method, but as they’re elastic they don’t prevent joints or muscles from flexing. Cotton also allows the skin to breathe, and these bandages are washable and reusable. Crepe bandages can also be used for dressing retention.Rest the cast on a pillow/cushion so that your foot is higher than your hip. If symptoms do not improve after one or two hours then please return to us or your nearest A&E Department. Cast spreaders are used to open the cut edges of a cast for access to underlying cast padding, which is then cut with scissors. Spreaders come in various sizes for large and small casts. In some cases, a hip spica may only extend down one or more legs to above the knee. Such casts, called pantaloon casts, are occasionally seen to immobilize an injured lumbar spine or pelvis, in which case the trunk portion of the cast usually extends to the armpits. Cheyne Child Development: while you wait leaflet - Pre-School Age (Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster children) Do not get your plaster cast wet. This will weaken it, and your bone will no longer be properly supported.
