About this deal

The author and her husband conclude that organic farming is the niche to explore for them not just because it seems the only way small, non-agribusiness farming can be financially viable but it is the path farmers need to follow after years of being pushed to produce more and more food via chemicals and farming methods alien to their ancestors. The problem with the regenerative farming movement, Monbiot says, is that despite its beauty it is “yield blind” – using too much land and energy to produce relatively little food. In Regenesis: Feeding the World Without Devouring the Planet he presents a vision for the future of food production. Because social media is so visual, farmers have this incredible ability to be able to connect to people who would never think about or go to the countryside by showing them what it looks like and explaining what they’re doing.

As an American I have difficulty understanding the differences in farming policy and scale but many things apply world wide. She shines a light on the human side of farming, on the real cost of cheap food and on the regenerative choices some farmers are making. Sarah and her family's story, her childhood experiences around farms and her current life maintaining one are interspersed beautifully through the stories of many other farmers and the myriad issues they face. I have understood that when we learn about something, we see it and when we don’t know about it, we don’t see it.

About — Sarah Langford

It is also a beautiful read including a growning family and appreciation of nature and it’s fragility in the hands of humans. After living in London, barrister and author Sarah Langford left for the countryside to go back to the farming life she had grown up in. This book is sharing a very important environmental message about biodiversity, our soils, and food production.Monbiot’s arguments take account of the needs of everyone in society, not just those who can afford premium meat, and not just those of us in the UK. Here is a path to improving our farming practices (and animal welfare) which doesn’t steal from future generations. Show caption Sarah Langford and George Monbiot are in agreement about many of the main problems: soil depletion, market pressures and industrialisation.
