About this deal

As explained above, make sure you’re using your dehumidifier at times of day when it will be the cheapest and most effective. Does a dehumidifier use a lot of electricity? A dehumidifier's extraction rate is an average of how much moisture it can remove from the air during a given timeframe. Most commonly this is measured in litres per day, so an extraction rate of 10L/per day means the dehumidifier should be able to extract 10 litres of moisture within 24 hours if running continuously. In practice, this also depends on the humidity levels of the room, and the ambient temperature.

When operating the Pro Breeze 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier, you can either leave it running continuously until you switch it off, or make the most of the built-in Automatic Humidity Sensor. This allows you to set your desired room humidity between 30%-80%, and once this level is reached the unit will turn off to conserve energy. For some reason, Pro Breeze has neglected to put a cover on the top of the water tank, so when you pull it out to empty it (which is in itself awkward as there's no proper handle to remove it) the water sloshes around everywhere, potentially drenching your flooring. The downside is that this dehumidifier has a far lower extraction rate than most, extracting just 0.3 litres of water from the air per day. For comparison, the best in class Meaco Arete One dehumidifier can extract between 10 and 25 litres of water from the air per day depending which model you opt for. Water tank capacity is also reduced, with the Silentnight model only able to hold 0.6L of water. That means you'll be emptying the tank frequently. Air filter: Some models come with a HEPA filter which helps to provide cleaner air in your home, which will be helpful for any allergy sufferers. If you want a dehumidifier of a similar power and price point, the slightly more expensive ProBreeze 1500ml Mini Dehumidifier remains our best budget buy, offering a better extraction rate of 0.5L and a larger 1.5L water tank, which means you won’t be emptying it quite so frequently. That said, the ProBreeze 1500ml Mini Dehumidifier is also larger in size, measuring H30 x W22 x D16cm compared to the Russell Hobbs' H22 x W14 x D14cm frame. And, the ProBreeze 1500ml is twice the weight, weighing in at 1.85kg.

What does a dehumidifier do?

Humidity levels: Relative humidity (RH) should sit between 30 to 60%, and most models have a built-in humidistat to keep the room at your chosen level. Devices with an auto-setting monitor adjust the moisture levels in the room, which can save on electricity. Plus, the MeacoDry Arete One dehumidifier'sSmart Laundrymodeworks brilliantly for drying washing indoors – wet laundry was dry in hours rather than the days it can usually take in the draughty Victorian terrace we tested the unit in.

Litres per Day: Removes up to 12 Litres of water per day with low energy consumption. Ideal for dampness, mould and moisture in homes, basements and bathrooms suffering from damp and humid conditions. It can't quite beat the MeacoDry Arete One on overall performance, but if you're willing to put up with noisier operation and higher running costs in exchange for its powerful performance, then this Pro Breeze model will make short work of getting wet washing ready for the airing cupboard. Like me, some users also found the water tank capcacity too small considering the extraction rate that can be achieved per day, which left them having to empty it frequently. Verdict Similarly to the Meaco, the Pro Breeze 20L Premium doesn't have any Wi-Fi connectivity, and can't be operated via App control. This is a bit of a shame for an otherwise premium product, especially as the Pro Breeze 30L Premium High Capacity Dehumidifier with Smart App Control does have these features. Adding this in to the 20L model would have been a great addition. Running costs vary depending on the size, make and model of dehumidifier you opt for. However, the Pro Breeze 12L Low Energy dehumidifier is specifically marketed as a low energy use dehumidifier, so energy costs should be low.Our lab tests cover some of the most important tasks a dehumidifier performs (including their water extraction, energy efficiency, humidistat function) as well as how easy they are to use and the noise they produce. But there are some things our extensive testing can't reveal – the most common dehumidifier faults is one of them. Of course, with the cost of living and climate crisis, it's important to take into account the energy usage of any home appliance, and you'll likely be wondering how much a dehumidifier costs to run. The Pro Breeze 12L Low Energy Dehumidifier doesn't have Wi-Fi or App connectivity, so there's no set-up required. Once the refrigerant has settled you can just plug it in and turn it on. Design So, if you’re after the smallest dehumidifier on the market, we think the Russell Hobbs RHDH1061G wins the accolade of best small dehumidifier, with good all round performance for its size housed in one of the smallest builds on the market – along as you don't expect too much from that 0.3L extraction rate. Water tank capacity: This is how much water the unit can hold, ranging from around 250ml to six litres. The smaller the dehumidifier, the more regularly you’ll have to empty the tank, though some larger models have a continuous drainage option through a hose.
