I’ve not used a pass-through dummy, but I suspect your suspicion is correct – the EDID of the connected downstream device is ignored (no connect) while the 5V and DDC pins are taken to the dummy plug’s internal EEPROM along with the HPD line being pulled up to signal to the source that there is a sink attached. The 5V could be sent down to the end device in parallel to make it happy but the returning DDC is likely just not connected at all. Reading the DDC of the end sink shouldn’t make a difference to it – but keep in mind that such a solution would “fail” if the EDID in the dummy causes the source to generate a mode that the sink cannot understand or synchronise with. The best way to be sure is to buy one and trace it out … this is merely my musings based on my understanding of the standard. Build Quality: Consider the build quality of the dummy plug.
