About this deal

On 17 July 2007, Jamie T's debut album Panic Prevention was shortlisted as one of the 12 nominees for the Mercury Prize. Panic Prevention was often included in the 'best albums of the decade' lists, including: No. 13 out of 50 in Observer Music Monthly and No. 53 out of 100 in NME. Treays ended the announcement by hinting at new material on the way, as he read: “Also, maybe say something about new music coming out soon.” Jamie T played his first gigs for four years in July 2014 at in Glasgow, Liverpool and Portsmouth. Around the same time a new single, "Don't You Find", made its debut on BBC Radio 1, chosen by Zane Lowe as his "Hottest Record in the World". In September 2014 his third album, entitled Carry on the Grudge, was released. [11] Thank You is one of Jamie’s favourites, mainly because of the frequent repetition of a cab company name, Addison Lee. The CD version of the anniversary reissue will include a previously unreleased recording of a gig, ‘Panic Prevention Disco: Live @ The Scala’, in 2006. At the time the show was recorded on to cassette and given away for free at gigs. It features an encore including a version of Billy Bragg’s 1983 song ‘A New England’.

There was a three-week gap between the two gigs, just enough time for me to forget everything I’d rehearsed. The record was originally released on January 29, 2007, and was hugely influential on the British indie scene at the time and beyond. The South London musician – real name Jamie Treays – deftly mixed punk, hardcore, rap, and indie influences on the album’s boisterous songs, cutting them with iconic samples, like that of former poet laureate John Betjeman on the beloved single “Sheila.”

It doesn’t strike me then, nor will it for at least another decade, that maybe the really special thing about these songs, the thread that encourages such affinity, is not the ingenuity of the collision between the references that littered his walls and the ‘have a go hero’s’ inside. Nor is it the juxtaposition between the ‘I think that’s the scrappiest version of that I’ve ever done in my life’ delivery and the particular sonic detail within. Neither, even, is it even the lulling between fantasy and reality that Jamie has encouraged in me in myriad ways for a couple of years previous. It might be that at every show, whether we know it or not, the thousands of us embarking on adult life for the first time are screaming out in unison to a young man’s articulating of his own, extreme anxieties. If only we’d known how prescient that would be fifteen years later. I get where he’s coming from because there’s nothing quite like a Jamie T record, from the singular turns of phrase to the unexpected twists and turns of the music.
