About this deal

While Sony's FE 135mm f/1.8 GM is an excellent lens, Samyang's new 135mm f/1.8 AF is effectively half the price – and that could represent great value for hobbyist shooters who can't justify pro-level price tags, particularly for a relatively specialist focal length. On our test, both lenses seem to exhibit no trace of longitudinal chromatic aberrations even wide open – impressive. The Samyang AF 135mm f/1.8 FE is lighter than other 135mm lenses compatible with full-frame Sony FE mount, but it realizes overwhelming resolution in the entire image area and expresses the subject with clear image quality,” the company says. “You can capture the subject’s details from the fluttering hairs of models to the twinkling of nebulae light-years away with unprecedented resolution.” Sony 135mm GM vignetter (corrections off) – top left – f/1.8, top right – f/2.8, bottom left – f/4, bottom right – f/5.6

I found the 135mm to be brilliantly sharp, and a pleasure to work with, mostly. It was challenging, and a little frustrating at times, but overall quite good fun. The 135mm threw me out a little, as I’m used to shooting with much wider lenses. It took some getting used to the idea that the camera had to be so far away most of the time. The Samyang 135mm is the cheapest AF one and the lightest of the F1.8. It has a very good build quality but the Sony is a bit better in that matter. The Samyang has the shortest min focusing distance by a tiny hairGlobally the Sony give a little bit more natural and gentle portraits and the Samyang a bit more punchy results, it is a matter of which rendering you prefer Optical construction is 13 elements in 11 groups, including 3 ED (Extra Low Dispersion), 2 HR (High Refractive Index) and 1 U-Asph (Ultra-precision aspherical). Add 11 bladed diaphragm, weather sealing and a virtually silent Linear STM motor and we have a highly effective design. This completes a series of Samyang AF prime lenses, covering 24mm, 35mm, 45mm, 75mm and now 135mm. It is worth mentioning that officially the Sony 135mm GM can go up to 30fps while the Samyang can’t however in our testing, we could hardly see any difference in performance and they are both exceptionally fast on the A1. Image stabilization

The Sony is a bit heavier at almost 1KG/2.1LBS compared to just under 800g/1.8LBS of the Samyang (both without the hoods). Flare is virtually non-existent, the UMC coating being superb at suppressing any artefacts and maintaining contrast even in challenging lighting conditions.with the same basic picture qualities, Etc. I have a D750 and D858 with 18-35 3.5, 28mm 1.8, and 85 1.8 (An 105 2.8 might be a better

The AF range is set to infinity at a minimum focus distance of 0.69m. (AF search may take slightly longer.) MPB puts photo and video kit into more hands, more sustainably. Every month, visual storytellers sell more than 20,000 cameras and lenses to MPB. Choose used and get affordable access to kit that doesn’t cost the earth.Apart from the astrophotography that was not tested because of the weather, the lens was faultless in its operation. Suitable subjects are landscapes, architecture, portraiture, sports events, street and low light. The SteadyShot system built into Sony camera bodies effectively helps to keep images as crisp as possible. The Samyang MF 135mm F2.0 ED UMC is a telephoto lens that has been loved by many people for its excellent resolution since its launch in 2015. Typically, it was admired as a lens for portrait photography, but over time, the MF 135mm went beyond portraits and also became popular for shooting landscapes and astrophotography. Accordingly, Samyang Optics has decided to release an AF evolution of this lens, adding convenience for every user and genre of photography. The Samyang AF 135mm strikes a very nice balance between a quality build while also keeping the weight down. I like the general profile and look of the lens and appreciate the growing functionality that Samyang is building into these new lenses. They don’t have quite the level of robustness that either a Sony GM or the recent Sigma DN prime lenses do, but this is compensated by a lower price point and lower weight (and frequently smaller size, though that’s not entirely the case here). I’m happy with the general trend of Samyang design. Autofocus Performance Samyang had already an excellent Samyang 135mm F2 AS UMC manual lens but that was more than 10 years old in term of design. The new Samyang 135mm F1.8 AF come with a new optical formula and with AF and is competing with the Sony FE 135mm F1.8 GM (1900 euros)
