About this deal

Rosamund Jane Lupton (née Orde-Powlett), is a British writer. She studied literature at Cambridge University. She is perhaps best known for her novels Sister, Afterwards, The Quality of Silence and Three Hours Early life and family [ edit ]

Starred Review. British author Lupton's unusual and searing debut is her heroine Beatrice Hemming's letter to her dead younger sister, Tess." - Publishers Weekly A winner, as worth reading for its psychological intensity as it is for its mystery plot, not to mention the genuinely surprising twist near the end.” —BookReporterInitially, I really enjoyed this book. It opens up and immediately grasps readers with its unique perspective - the book is narrated by one sister directly to her deceased sister, catching her up on what has been happening since her death. It really gives an interesting frame to the novel and its actions. There is a lot of emotion in this book - and Lupton does a wonderful job of conveying a realistic relationship between these two sisters. This was a pretty good mystery/thriller. Beatrice has always been close to her sister Tess, but after moving to the States they grow more distant. So when Beatrice gets a call from her mother to say that Tess has gone missing, she jumps on the first flight home to London. I thought this book was silly and beyond that insulting in its treatment of depression and suicide. Having said that, it was a lot better than any book I've ever written (none). Still...ugh. A suspenseful, professional-grade north country procedural whose heroine, a deft mix of compassion and attitude, would be welcome to return and tie up the gaping loose end Box leaves. The unrelenting cold makes this the perfect beach read.

When everything eventually came to light I was slightly confused. Without spoiling it, a lot of the information involved is heavily medical, and went right over my head. So even now having finished the book I still can’t entirely understand what the motive behind it all was. I enjoyed following Beatrice as she unravels the sinister events that led to her sister’s death. We learn that their younger brother died of Cystic Fibrosis as a child, which heavily impacted their family, and possibly Tess’ baby. Discuss the novel’s structure. How did it affect you as the narrator referred to Tess as “you”? What was your understanding of Mr. Wright and his role? Tess was also participating in an experimental medical trial that might have gone very wrong. As a determined Bee gives her statement to the lead investigator, her story reveals a predator who got away with murder—and an obsession that may cost Bee her own life. Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan.Though her family and the police see a grieving sister in denial, unwilling to accept the facts, Bee uncovers the affair Tess was having with a married man and the pregnancy that resulted, and her difficultly with a stalker who may have crossed the line when Tess refused his advances. Tess was also participating in an experimental medical trial that might have gone very wrong. As a determined Bee gives her statement to the lead investigator, her story reveals a predator who got away with murder–and an obsession that may cost Bee her own life. A] fast-paced, absurdly entertaining novel… .Along with a juicy mystery, it resounds with an authentic sense of sisterly love and loyalty.” —The Boston Globe Along the way, this adoption of having an open mind on everything makes her become more like her sister Tess. Soon she has a list of suspects, including a married professor and fellow art student obsessed with her. This book is a debut novel by the author. That said, all I can say is I will definitely be reading more by her. Why was Tess drawn to Emilio, and Kasia to Mitch? Would you have been more attracted to Todd or to William?

Thank you for visiting this bio. My books are not easy to slot into a particular genre, and you can usually be found under 'contemporary fiction', 'literary fiction', 'political thriller' and 'psychological thriller.' If you try one I hope you enjoy it. A compulsive thriller with genuine originality. Very clever, very surprising, very touching. I devoured it.”— Louise CandlishThe story is written in the voice of Beatrice, who appears to be writing a letter to her late sister Tess. I did not have high expectation going into this novel. I knew that it was a decent thriller, because a friend of my suggested that I should read it, but I did not expect to be blown away by it... Boy was I wrong. Their bond has been strong since they were young, no matter how different they were. She has always been close to Tess, but they grew apart after relocating to the States.

As the book develops, we learn more about the sisters, and we form a bond with them. Both sisters are interesting characters. Beatrice is practical and has a mathematical, analytical brain worked in corporate design in the USA before Tess’s death. Upon Tess’ death, Beatrice left her job and moved to London to untangle the death of her sister. To support herself, she left her lucrative job in the USA and started to work in catering. Tess was a fine art student and had several suitors. She had an affair with one of her teachers, Emilio Codi, and she got pregnant with him. However, he was married and unwilling to leave his wife. Tess also attracted the interest of another fine art student, Simon, who is also the MP’s son. Simon used to stalk Tess, and she was his muse for his art project. Before her death, she wanted to meet Simon and stayed with him. He lied to the police about their last meeting. Tess’ unborn child was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Therefore, Tess saw many doctors and undertook some paid trial in a study. Tess also saw a psychiatrist, who changed her diagnosis from depression to post-natal psychosis upon her death. There appeared to be several suspects for Tess’ murder, but the police early concluded that this was a suicide case and refused to look beyond this. In its core, Sister is an emotional story about two siblings and their relationship. While there is a mystery going on (and it is quite a good one), the focus is never completely on that - which is why I enjoyed this novel as much as I did. A lot of thrillers focus on the twists and turns, and because of that, the characters end up being flat. Here, that is not the case. I loved reading about both Beatrice and Tess, and I loved how their bond was always strong, no matter how different they were. This is one of those rare thrillers that got me really emotional, and I cared more for the characters, than the mystery - and I think that is why I was really moved and shaken at the end, when I found out what was really going on.Before turning to novels, Lupton was a script-writer for television and film, writing original screenplays. She won Carlton Television's new writers' competition. ( Adapted from Wikipedia. Retrieved 3/24/2016.) The police and Tess’s family conclude the case as suicide and try moving on with their lives while accepting the self-questioning and revelations. According to the police report, Tess killed herself due to postpartum depression after giving birth to a still baby. However, she takes things into her own hands and embarks on a journey to find the truth, no matter the price she has to pay. A thrilling story of fierce love between siblings, Sister is a suspenseful and accomplished debut with a stunning twist. ( From the publisher.)
