About this deal

Coughs may be a sign of worsening asthma so if your cough does not improve with treatment, speak to your doctor Two included studies were at low risk of bias per the Cochrane assessment. This is a minimal improvement to our previous systematic review, in which 1 of 10 included studies was of robust quality per the Jadad scale [ 10]. All but 1 of the remaining studies were at high or critical risk of bias. The standard of reporting was poor. Half of the RCTs and all OSs measured cough severity subjectively using unblinded outcome assessors. Comedication was expressly allowed in 5 studies [ 18, 21, 23– 25] and not specified in 3 [ 16, 17, 26], limiting the validity of conclusions . Gulyas, A., Repges, R., & Dethlefsen, U. (1997). Ivex is a medical device in the form of a syrup for use in children over 1 year of age and adults. The preparation is intended for use in the treatment of wet (productive) and dry cough. The active ingredient of the syrup is ivy extract, which has an expectorant effect. Additionally, the composition uses honey and extracts of thyme and marshmallow. The syrup coats the mucosa of the throat and larynx with a protective film, which soothes cough, and protects the mucosa against irritation, including the irritating effects of dust, smoke, smog and cold air. In the case of wet cough, the preparation helps to remove secretions.

Thymus vulgaris (common thyme, English thyme, summer thyme, winter thyme, French thyme, [19] or garden thyme) [20] is a commonly used culinary herb. It also has medicinal uses. Common thyme is a Mediterranean perennial which is best suited to well-drained soils and full sun. Inappropriate use of antibiotics for viral respiratory tract infections is a significant problem causing both pathogen resistance and substantial health care expenditure without affecting the resolution of cough [ 7]. Therefore nonantibiotic alternative treatment options are needed. Commonly used over-the-counter drugs for acute cough in both children and adults are mucolytic agents and antitussives, which are also widely prescribed in primary care settings [ 8]. In the UK, cough liquids accounted for sales worth 102 million pounds in 2008 [ 9]. Among these nonantibiotic cough remedies, herbal preparations containing extracts from the leaves of ivy (Hedera helix L.) enjoy great popularity in many European countries [ 10– 12]. In 2007, more than 80% of herbal expectorants prescribed in Germany comprised ivy extract and amounted to nearly 2 million prescriptions nationwide and a volume of sales exceeding 13 million Euros [ 10]. Thymus herba-barona (caraway thyme) is used both as a culinary herb and a ground cover, and has a very strong caraway scent due to the chemical carvone. [ citation needed]

Medical device Ivex syrup intended for use in the case of persistent, wet cough, for use in children over 1 year of age and adults. Thyme has been used through the ages by many different cultures. The Egyptians used it for embalming, the ancient Greeks put it in their baths and used it as incense in their temples, and in the Middle Ages the Europeans believed that by putting it under their pillows they would have a sounder, nightmare free sleep. Thyme might slow blood clotting. Taking thyme along with medications that also slow blood clotting might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. Cuzzolin, L. and Benoni, G.
