About this deal
Destroy walls and dash through buildings with the Rescue Specialist, revive unconscious survivors with the Paramedic, command your team members out of dangerous situations with the Fire Captain, and many more. The door to the kitchen remains open so she’ll be able to make a quick getaway after checking the POI marker (potential victim). The experienced gamers and adult players found the Family Game a bit too simplistic, but thought the Experienced game was more fun.
The game ends with the players winning when seven people have been rescued, or they lose when four are lost or the building collapses by taking to much damage. For a game where luck plays a big part it’s amazing how often we have a close game with highs and lows when we think we’re going to lose and then manage to squeak a victory.I'm at the point where I start the Java game over if certain characters are chosen randomly, and that's unfortunate. Rather, it requires the nuanced exercise of political, economic, and military resources, in a form of prima facie diplomacy – on the waters, in the air, and ultimately in the minds of the people – to achieve victory. The main purpose of the ambulance is to rescue victims, as it is no longer sufficient to simply remove the victims from the burning building; they now must be brought to the ambulance.
In a mechanism similar to that found in Pandemic, each player’s turn ends with the fire spreading, creating ongoing problems for the firefighters. For instance, one of the players just refused to waste any time walking; he just charged straight towards the victims, chopping through any walls that got in his way. Same with the Hazmat Technician (a particularly blah ability; he can eliminate a HazMat POI by spending 2 actions).
When that type of atmosphere can be successfully recreated in a board game – even in a small fashion – it bodes well for the game. We found it a challenge to get the fires under control while simultaneously trying to rescue the victims. It's certainly more addictive and more streamlined but the y're both as exciting and realistic with hotshots having a much better design and longer gameplay and probably more re-playability due to it not being as simple as Flashpoint. His theory was that the time he’d save on the way back (through the chopped walls) while saddled with having to carry a victim would more than make up for the time spent chopping.
