About this deal

Stunning colour photographs and exciting accounts of Steve's own encounters with some of these animals bring the world of natural venom alive He also looks at the science of natural toxins, and at how natural venoms are increasingly used in medicine and for the treatment of chronic disease in humans. Steve’s great passion is inspiring others to get outside and get interested in wildlife and the Great Outdoors, and in this ‘How To’ guide, he comes up with a thousand suggestions for doing just that.

STEVE BACKSHALL

Earlier, Backshall began his career writing for Rough Guides and then joined National Geographic Channelas Adventurer in Residence. He stayed in the Colombian jungles and filmed a video there which was liked and bought by National Geographic Channel. Also an author, he has written numerous nonfiction books and a fiction series, The Falcon Chronicles. Backshall is best known for his cheery enthusiasm for dangerous wildlife on our TV screens, but he is unexpectedly forthright about the state of British rivers.

He meets fifteen year old Sinter, a spoiled rich girl, who is running away from an arranged marriage and their uneasy friendship will eventually form an unshakeable bond, as together they face adventure and danger as two young eco-warriors in a truly threatening world. MOUNTAIN - A LIFE ON THE ROCKS is the dramatic account of a life of daring, a narrative peppered with memorable anecdotes. In 2003, Steve moved to the BBC’s Natural History Unit, where he took his place on the long running children’s wildlife programme ‘The Really Wild Show’. Combined with his own incredible experiences with creatures, large and small, Steve reveals tricks of camouflage, feats of strength, endurance, teamwork and speed, as well as giving us a glimpse into the lives of extremeophiles and looking at some of our planet’s endangered species. That distant rumble, that’s the water treatment works outflow that should be a dribble thundering into the river.

His parents travelled bravely and on a small budget, “rocking up in villages at 1am without any sense of where we were going to sleep that night”, he remembers. But Saker needs Sinter to defeat the Clan, and so the two young eco-warriors will come together one more time. Today, the big natural history series are made without presenters so they can be sold around the world and revoiced for each country. Making television can be very time-consuming with a lot of wasted time, but with Deadly 60 we turn up with two or three cameras rolling, let them roll, and what happens happens.

He began his career working for the Rough Guides and freelance travel writing for various publications including The Independent and The Times. He illustrates his tips with examples of his own detective work on land and in the water from tropical rainforests to the African Savanna, from the Arctic tundra to the desert. The days of an English-speaking presenter being filmed in a rainforest for a blockbuster natural history series are gone, he thinks. Between 1998 and 2003, he produced, filmed and presented adventure and natural history programmes for the channel. Alongside insisting that swimming must be learned as young as possible, Backshall’s parents gave him the gift of nature and travel.Backshall recently went upstream with campaigners from River Action, an environmental charity, and tested the river outside the treatment works. Jack, Polly and Annabelle from Corton Primary School in Lowestoft dressed as Diary of a Whimpy kid, Mary Poppins and Goldilocks. One recent example came after years of great white sharks mysteriously disappearing when orcas arrived in their waters. From the nine-feet long Komodo Dragon through species such as the King Cobra, Lionfish, Fat-tail Scorpion and Poison Dart-frog to the diminutive but lethal Black Widow Spider, author Steve Backshall takes a fascinating look at the different types of natural venoms.
