Cavanagh, D, 1993. Irreproachable: The Smiths: the very best of British?. Q Magazine, 1 December 1993.

Quality is good, I won't say it has the clarity of the best out there, but it's certainly good enough. I only own _Hatful of Hollow_ and _Singles_ by the Smiths, but that's enough to know that they are one of the best bands of the 80s. In addition, the original single version of "Hand in Glove" is included, not the remixed version that appears on The Smiths. It features a fade- intro and fade-out, louder bass, and vocals that sound very distant.

This Charming Man" has softer and more upbeat vocals, guitars and even drums than the version released as a single and on some versions of The Smiths. The bass line is louder and altered slightly. Additionally, there is no solo guitar introduction. Beyond that, infant euthanasia, unemployment, employment, rejection and apathy are among the manifold miseries on offer, shot through with a waster's humour (usually) and an implicit, muscular, ambiguous sexuality that scared the shit out of millions. "Reel around the fountain," forever trying to catch up with itself like a record played off-speed, may be the best thing they ever recorded, and the epitome of Morrissey's interrupted fantasies. The radio session versions of songs are different from other studio recordings. Some of the major differences are: For Jensen on 25 August, 1983 (broadcast 5 September): " Accept Yourself", "I Don't Owe You Anything", "Pretty Girls Make Graves", "Reel Around the Fountain" Hatful of Hollow Class T-Shirt: Silky and soft "Triblend" single jersey. The Smiths 'Hatful of Hollow' T-Shirt. 1983 photo taken by Gilles Decroix for Liberation french magazine of a Early Smiths release, containing material recorded for several BBC radio sessions as well as other stuff. (If we had a John Peel type on the US government's payroll, I'd be willing to live with a despot or two.) THE IMPOTENCE OF ERNEST" is etched into the runout groove of side A. As well as being a pun on Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, it is an allusion to the impotence that Ernest Hemingway suffered in his final years. "Ian (EIRE)", etched on side B, refers to Marr's younger brother.
