About this deal

This study was a retrospective case study that reviewed a small number of reported choking emergencies where a DeChoker had been used, with an in-depth exploration of four incidences in three care homes carried out over a short time period. All “ type of obstructions” were recorded as food, with consistency varying between porridge and a solid piece of meat. We’d like to give a particular shout out to Phil, the technician / engineer who has been the consistent friendly face visiting our business to inspect and test our mobility hoists every 6 months. She has been with CR since 2021 and covers a wide range of topics, but she is particularly interested in anything health- or parenting-related.

LifeVac Europe, which is based in the UK and is one of the leading companies in this sector, promotes its device for saving children’s lives around the world. View image in fullscreen LifeVac has agreed not to sell child-sized masks for its emergency suction device in the UK. In summary all participants felt that the DeChoker had value, acting as an additional lifesaving resource when back blows and abdominal thrusts had failed to remove the obstruction, or couldn't be performed.LifeVac has gone through several clinical tests and is recommended by hundreds of doctors around the world. The risks associated with administering the current interventions for the management of the adult choking victim for patients and staff are recognized. Yes it's through a device and it's been made for that reason, but because it was such a positive outcome and because he recovered so quickly, and we've still got him. Objectives: An independent evaluation to explore the experiences of health and care professionals who used DeChoker in real-life adult choking emergencies, focusing on the product's safety, efficacy and ease of application. The experience of watching a victim choke was identified by staff as traumatic; they articulated that had the outcome of events been negative, it might impact on their ability to continue in their jobs.

Death from choking is common among both the elderly and kids, and the major responsible factor was - food! Due to their young age, children often choke while eating, which can be extremely dangerous, especially if they accidentally ingest anything other than food. And because the product itself isn’t recommended for children under 22 pounds, it isn’t meant for most babies and smaller toddlers. The MHRA told the Observer that updated regulatory guidance regarding anti-choking devices would be published in due course. This life-saving device sits over the victim’s mouth and nose to create a seal, pull back on the handle and a vacuum dislodges any airway blockage in seconds. After evaluating studies of the effectiveness of suction-based airway clearance devices, the Resuscitation Council of the United Kingdom decided not to recommend their use. So, as a result, they often swallow different objects like crayons, coins, gum, and small plastic joys that are stuck in their throats, and they just feel devastated.

This appeared to be related to staff and their personal connection to their individual resident and the impact of the emergency situation. The suction-based devices are already used in care homes across the country and there is a campaign for them to be more widely available, but emergency doctors are concerned that families may be misled by some of the promotional material. In the days/weeks following the incident, did the resident develop a chest infection or aspiration pneumonia? Many of the staff interviewed reflected on the lack of specific guidelines for their client group and the uncertainties this creates. Back blows and abdominal thrusts were administered in all four incidents explored with the individual deemed unconscious when the device was used.

It looks a lot like a small toilet plunger, with bellows that attach to a clear face mask that’s placed over the choking person’s nose and mouth.

We all know that in the past few years, we needed to be trained well for the Heimlich maneuver so we could save the lives of our dear ones in choking situations. My husband got up, having performed the Heimlich maneuver on me before (I seem to have a problem with seafood), but I was also in my second trimester of pregnancy; the Heimlich requires modifications during pregnancy, and he wasn’t trained in those modifications. Training in the use of Dechoker was felt to be adequate, however it was suggested this could be improved through role play scenarios to strengthen the staff response. In addition case study methodology has been criticized within healthcare literature for its lack of rigor, however the nature of choking makes other methodologies problematic. The device requires positioning of the face mask whilst pulling the plunger, and interviewees felt that although it could be managed by a single person, additional team support was beneficial, and that the device needed to be close by so that the casualty was not left unattended. In keeping with case study design a mixed methods approach was used ( 26), which included both quantitative and qualitative data, augmented by other available data sources. Non-Invasive – LifeVac is the only airway clearance device that is completely non-invasive, meaning reduced patient risk, faster deployment, and easier use. A 2022 study of self-reported experiences found that for 38 of 39 adults with known swallowing problems who had a choking event, the device removed the obstruction.
