This study was a retrospective case study that reviewed a small number of reported choking emergencies where a DeChoker had been used, with an in-depth exploration of four incidences in three care homes carried out over a short time period. All “ type of obstructions” were recorded as food, with consistency varying between porridge and a solid piece of meat. This appeared to be related to staff and their personal connection to their individual resident and the impact of the emergency situation. The suction-based devices are already used in care homes across the country and there is a campaign for them to be more widely available, but emergency doctors are concerned that families may be misled by some of the promotional material. In the days/weeks following the incident, did the resident develop a chest infection or aspiration pneumonia? Many of the staff interviewed reflected on the lack of specific guidelines for their client group and the uncertainties this creates. Back blows and abdominal thrusts were administered in all four incidents explored with the individual deemed unconscious when the device was used.

We all know that in the past few years, we needed to be trained well for the Heimlich maneuver so we could save the lives of our dear ones in choking situations. My husband got up, having performed the Heimlich maneuver on me before (I seem to have a problem with seafood), but I was also in my second trimester of pregnancy; the Heimlich requires modifications during pregnancy, and he wasn’t trained in those modifications. Training in the use of Dechoker was felt to be adequate, however it was suggested this could be improved through role play scenarios to strengthen the staff response. In addition case study methodology has been criticized within healthcare literature for its lack of rigor, however the nature of choking makes other methodologies problematic.The device requires positioning of the face mask whilst pulling the plunger, and interviewees felt that although it could be managed by a single person, additional team support was beneficial, and that the device needed to be close by so that the casualty was not left unattended. In keeping with case study design a mixed methods approach was used ( 26), which included both quantitative and qualitative data, augmented by other available data sources. Non-Invasive – LifeVac is the only airway clearance device that is completely non-invasive, meaning reduced patient risk, faster deployment, and easier use. A 2022 study of self-reported experiences found that for 38 of 39 adults with known swallowing problems who had a choking event, the device removed the obstruction.
