About this deal

Social deduction games can be a little confusing for those new to the game. And, by their very nature, can be quite difficult to teach ‘as you go along’, as if anyone reveals their identity, the game is ruined. The graphics on the Clue and Means Cards are for reference only. Players should use their imagination based on the texts. 2. Roles After everything else is set up the only remaining task is to pass out badge tokens. Everyone except the forensic scientist gets a badge token, and they must be placed within eyesight of all other players in front of you. These tokens indicate that this player has not attempted to solve the crime yet. GAMEPLAY After the placement of the first marker, all players but the Forensic Scientist can freely discuss and express their opinions about the investigation.

Deception: Murder in Hong Kong Board Game Review Deception: Murder in Hong Kong Board Game Review

In your first game, it is recommended to assign the role of the "Forensic Scientist" to the most expressive player. 3. Badge Tokens We love the unique game play of deducing a pair of cards from vague clues given by the Forensic Scientist. The Forensic Scientist draws a new tile from the draw pile. This tile replaces one of the previously used Scene tiles except "Location of Crime" and "Cause of Death". If the Murderer is arrested but can identify the Witness, the Witness is considered to be killed, allowing the Murderer and the Accomplice to get away with murder and win the game. Will the Investigators be perceptive enough to successfully solve the crime or will the culprit(s) accomplish the perfect crime and get away with murder? If you are playing the murderer or the accomplice, you want the game to end without you being properly prosecuted. If the murder does get caught you have one last chance to win if there is a witness in the game, if you kill the witness then the murderer and accomplice go free. If you are playing the accomplice, you want to draw attention away from the murder any way you can. ROLES Accomplice (1): The accomplice wins if the murderer is not convicted by the end of the game, or if the murderer correctly kills the witness. The accomplice is trying to lead the investigators away from the murder at all costs.

Investigators must collaborate and use their wits, their hunches, and their keen deductive insight to correctly identify the means of murder and the key evidence to convict the killer. I’m a bit of a Resistance apologist. It was one of the first modern board games I really enjoyed. I’ve played it easily over 100 times and got to the point where people were attempting triple-bluffs with two different friend groups. I kind of burned out on the game after a while, through sheer over-play, but I still think it’s brilliant. It’s one of the most elegant games ever made. It takes the social deduction idea , distills it down to its essential parts, and somehow emerges as something deeper and more compelling than its peers. In the game, players take on the roles of investigators attempting to solve a murder case – but there’s a twist. The killer is one of the investigators! Each player’s role and team are randomly assigned at the start of play and include the unique roles of Forensic Scientist, Witness, Investigator, Murderer, and Accomplice. While the Investigators attempt to deduce the truth, the murderer’s team must deceive and mislead. This is a battle of wits! After the sixth marker is placed and the last piece of evidence has been discussed each player will get the chance to voice their thoughts on certain clues or means. This starts with the player left of the forensic scientist and ends with the person on their right. No one may talk or defend themselves during another players presentation. These will last about 30 seconds but can no longer dependent on what is decided before the game.

Then, during the Committing a Crime phase, don’t rush it. Be extra clear about your instructions. And, my goodness, make sure that anyone who has to open their eyes is absolutely silent when they do so. And then has their eyes firmly shut and their hands in a normal position when it’s time for everyone to open them again. The players all then get 30 seconds to present their opinions on the evidence and convince people to their way of thought. If at any time a player wants to make a guess to Solve the Case, they can do so. However, each player (other than the Forensic Scientist) only gets one guess during the game. So they need to be judicious when to do so. If they make an incorrect guess, they aren’t out of the game. They can still participate in all the discussion to help catch the murderer, but they just can’t make another guess. The forensic scientist will reveal themselves immediately. Then, players will close their eyes and the murderer will reveal themselves to the forensic scientist and indicate their means of murder and key evidence using the cards in front of them. Throughout the game, the forensic scientist will use the clue tiles to try to help the investigators guess these two things. Each investigator only gets one guess (handing in their badge in the process) and the murderer wins if nobody can guess both their means of murder and key evidence. Each round, the forensic scientist can use one more clue card, and each player gets 30 seconds to put forward their arguments. Three teams are competing for the title of fastest gun in the West: a sheriff with deputies, outlaws who want to bring down the sheriff and ruthless renegades who just want to be the last one standing. Only the sheriff is known at the start of the game, leading to unpredictable fights straight out of a western, with players teaming up then double-crossing one another. The Resistance: Avalon Complete fantastical quests and root out the traitors A player's role card will determine their loyalty and abilities.
