Whether it’s a lowly Mi-Go, a flesh-changing Deep One, or the great Cthulhu himself, you’ll find background details, stats, special rules and spells to effectively dispatch these wicked beasts upon your hapless investigators. I would have no trouble playing this only and nothing else, in the theoretical scenario 'if you have to choose a single game only what would that be'. What a new player will mind is that getting many specific skills in, say, language or science will only prove their worth if the Keeper allows them to; how some skills are ridiculously broad (Medicine) and ready for misuse if the Keeper is not paying attention; or that, Charm, a new skill, seems rather redundant for the purposes of such a game between Fast Talk and Persuade. Learning and casting spells is, as expected, an arduous affair, the latter always costing sanity points.

The layout can be a tad confusing at first, but that's mostly due to the growing pains of learning a new system.

Eliminating pluses or minuses on each roll and opting directly for half or one fifth skills and characteristics which are conveniently recorded in the record sheet puts the narrative back in the driving seat and smoothens the flow of the game. And characters now have the option to fight back instead of dodging, which makes combat more of a two-way process.

Every tome listed in the Keeper Rulebook can serve as the basis of its own story, and to inspire your very own cults to face off against your investigators. For the record I don't believe in free-loading so I would want to contribute to Chaosium in some way, I'm just working out if this particular guide is worth it.
