About this deal

The sky tops of London become star scrapers of if you look the right way, the side of your eye when a tree branch is sinister and a cloud more than.

Together with the good creatures of Cat Country—and with the help of a few magical spells—the children confront Grisana and her nasty crew. This is the story of Rosemary, a young girl who decides to help out her financially struggling mother by secretly offering her services as a cleaner during her summer holidays.

A good cat is apt to be independent, so she did not have things all her own way, and as Carbonel proved to be a Royal cat in a very special sense, that was understandable. I kind of wished she would have kept in mind future generations who didn't know what it was all about. In this last book, I did end up editing out some of the pre-teen snarkiness in this one, skipping over the "don't be stupid" kind of comments, which was easy to do. The loveable rogue witch of the first two books is sidelined and we have the not quite fully thought out (in more ways than one) Miss Dibdin, and the based on the Snow Queen in Narnia Mrs Witherspoon. For one, John and Rosemary forget about Carbonel throughout the rest of the year; presumably, magic makes them forget, but it's incredibly sad for them to have these amazing adventures and remember almost nothing.

I am old, my claws are blunt and my flanks are lean, but my blood races like a young animal at the tale of such wickedness! The balance works well; the fantasy parts about wishing magic, summoning spells, and rainbow magic blending smoothly into everyday life. S. Lewis in this way) goes "Oh, you know what it's like" sometimes in lieu of describing the fancy fair foods or dinners. It was not a very pleasant arrangement, because the furniture was ugly (most of it was covered with horsehair that prickled, even through a winter dress), and the bathroom was always festooned with other people’s washing. Book 1 was better, but this was good enough, and will work well for an adult reading aloud to children ages 4 to 7, probably. The Vielmetter gallery in Los Angeles is currently hosting a solo exhibition of paintings by Celia Paul, artist and author of the New York Review Books memoirs Self-Portrait and Letters to Gwen John. I wished that Carbonel could have been a bit nicer to poor Rosemary who just wanted a pet to cuddle with, but he is a king, after all.

Looking above the cars that honked and hurried, they could see the name in gold letters, as well as two great glass bottles full of glowing red and green liquid that have been the sign of a dispenser of medicine in England since the days when few people could read. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending the kids getting involved in and likely changing the outcome of Carbonel's final battle to take back his kingdom but it was a fun read and I will seek out the other two to see where it goes from here.

When to Rosemary's surprise the cat starts talking to her, she learns that the woman is a witch, selling her possessions to start a new career. I always dreaded other kids coming over and invariably put out when my ideas weren't to their taste. B., age 10: I liked it pretty well but I wish the broom could have lived because it was my favorite character.

I first fell in love with this book as a child, read it successfully to a succession of classes and finally introduced it to my daughter who loves it just as much as me. But along the way Rosemary and her friend John must do some clever sleuthing, work a little magic of their own, and—not least—put up with the demands of a very haughty cat. I’m still so sad that I didn’t know about these books growing up because I would have loved them even more. I actually shed a tear right at the end (always the sign of a good read) but mostly the book is gently humorous, as we share the unexpected adventures of Rosemary and John, two ordinary children who find themselves doing extraordinary things. The prescription is for some of the red liquid, which they know works because the druggist’s assistant accidentally spills some on his hand and licks it, and is able to understand Carbonel.Brown has to take in mending and other sewing work to earn money, and even so, she has to work much harder than Rosemary likes.
